Travelling Home For Christmas!

Having met all the dreaded deadlines it's finally time to go home for Christmas! When I'm travelling home from Aberdeen I need to get a three and half hour bus journey to Glasgow where I catch my flight. Although I do enjoy an occasional long bus journey where I can listen to my music and do nothing for a few hours, I wouldn't be able to do it without a few essential pieces!

Comfort is key, especially when you're sitting on a bus for a few hours you don't want to be uncomfortable and constantly tossing and turning in your seat to find the right position (We've all been there!), so my outfit choice is something casual and cosy. I'm wearing an over-sized jumper with black leggings and trainers, what could be comfier! This outfit is loose and baggy which means I can sit relaxed without being restricted by tight clothing.

Earphones are essential. There have been many cases where I have forgotten my earphones on a long journey, which is an absolute nightmare. Listening to music or watching a movie is a great distraction for long journeys. You get so lost in thought that you don't realise the time passing you by. I will most definitely be making sure that I have packed my earphones the night before my trip home!

Wearing a travel pillow can help you to nod off as soon as you take off. They are so comforting to wear and help me to relax so much more, whilst supporting your neck so it doesn't get sore from sitting at an awkward angle. Wearing this and watching a movie on a phone or tablet is my perfect travelling combo!

My other key essentials include items such as tissues, anti-bacterial hand gel, a power bank, a bottle of water and mints/ chewing gum. I like to be fully prepared for any situation and I hate the thought of being in a situation where I'll need something that I don't have! These travel comforts will vary for each person but can offer a great deal of piece of mind!

Making a list the night before you travel for all your essential bits and pieces can help to make sure that nothing gets left behind! Hopefully this blog will help some of you for your journeys back home for crimbo!

Embrace Your Braces

Having braces is like the wrong rite of passage that many people experience. Some people get them at early teens or later on in life. I first got my braces on when I was 19 and I am still currently plagued with them. No matter how many times I hear the reassurance of “it will be worth it in the end” it does not help my current situation...

I have been wearing my braces now for almost a year now and have slowly (very slowly!) accepted their presence each time I look in the mirror or smile for a photograph. I have now become a lot more appreciative of being able to eat the foods that I want. With braces you need to start taking into consideration what foods will/will not get stuck in your brackets… Not really the first question you want to have to answer when looking at a delicious menu!

I find that seeded bread has to be the worst, although bread itself does not favour those with braces the seeds are a nightmare! They get lost and stuck in the smallest of gaps and are nearly impossible to get out even when you aggressively brush them a million times! You just have to wait it out and eventually they will budge.

I had to have 3 teeth removed, so not only did I have to wear the eye catching train tracks but I had massive gaps in my teeth too ( attractive I know!). To close these gaps I had to wear the dreaded elastics! Like Hansel and Gretel leaving a trail of breadcrumbs I began to leave a trail of elastics behind me especially when I was staying in my friends’ houses! Safe to say they weren’t too impressed!!

Going from being a big grinner to looking like someone in serious pain is not a good look! Subconsciously I started to wear less colour on my lips to take attention away from my mouth and braces. I now wear subtle colours such as different shades of nude or light colours such as mauve.

Even with all their inconveniences, the outcome of wearing braces overshadows the negatives. Having straight teeth will be amazing and I’m glad that I got them when I was a bit older because I will really appreciate having them and will look after them so well. From looking at celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Miley Cyrus it is clear the difference what having braces can do for your smile.

I’m hoping to get them off in the next few months and that will really give me a reason to smile!

Did Someone say Coffee?

For me, coffee is not just a hot beverage to keep you awake throughout the day. It is a way of socialising and getting together with friends you see every day or friends you haven't seen in a while. It brings people together and can be used as a form of escapism where you can temporarily remove yourself from daily life to sit back and relax whilst drinking a hot and comforting cup of coffee.

Chains such as Starbucks, Costa and Café Nero try to provide a certain atmosphere for customers through their choice of furniture and décor. These usually consist of large sofas that you can sink into and abstract pictures that make your mind wonder. These are ideal settings to get lost in conversation in but I can’t help but love local cafes that have a quirky design and unique character.

When wondering the streets of Aberdeen one afternoon, my friend and I came across this quaint and hidden away little coffee shop just off Belmont Street called The Coffee House.

When we stepped inside we were greeted by a warm and welcoming air that was filled with delicious foody smells. The place was full of happy chatter that was also contrasted with people in headphones doing their study. It is a great space to get away from your surroundings and look for inspiration. There is a homely atmosphere which I believe is created by the decorative cushions that are perfectly placed on the seats and the pleasant dim lighting.

As you approach the counter there is a wonderful selection of tempting treats such as cookies, cakes and buns. Chalk boards behind list a wide variety of delicious food and drink. Unlike most cafes, The Coffee House provide vegan options on a majority of dishes.

The coffee tastes brilliant (I recommend the lattes!) and the staff are also very accommodating and to top it all off they also offer a student discount!

So next time you’re walking around Aberdeen and find yourself at a loose end, or you’re looking for a change of scene to help you study I highly recommend you stop in to The Coffee House for a tasty refreshment and to soak up the homely atmosphere!
